Woodland Bluebells - Lancing Ring, West Sussex

Bluebells (Hyacinthoides non-scripta) are particularly associated with ancient woodland where it may dominate the under storey to produce carpets of violet–blue flowers in "bluebell woods", but also occurs in more open habitats in western regions. It is protected under UK law, and in some other parts of its range.

This photo was taken in Lancing Ring, West Sussex which is a local nature reserve within the South Downs National Park.

Since 2005, The Ring has been managed by a partnership between Adur District Council and The Friends of Lancing Ring and has been an example of how Councils and Community groups can work together.

This site is important for its chalk grassland, but also has other habitats such as a small woodland and a dewpond.

The Friends of Lancing Ring have 'task days' at 10am on the 3rd Sunday morning of every month when people can become actively involved in the improvement and maintenance of the Ring.

Anyone interested in getting involved please meet at the car park at the top of Mill Road in North Lancing because all help is appreciated.

When I was a kid, 50 years ago, I grew up In Halewick Lane and the ring was part of our playground. Back then it was very wild and had lots of mature Beech Trees which were mostly wiped out in the 1987 "Big Storm". We loved climbing those trees and making tunnels in the thick undergrowth and building camps. I live in London now but visit my Mother in Lancing so get to experience the changes that have been going on over the last few years.
