Honey Bees feeding on a Wallflower
A honey bee (or honeybee) is any member of the genus Apis, and they are primarily engaged in the production and storage of honey and they build nests from wax. Historically Honey Bees have been cultured or exploited for honey and beeswax by humans.
Modern hives also enable beekeepers to transport bees, moving from field to field as the crop needs pollinating and allowing the beekeeper to charge for the pollination services they provide thus changing the historical role of the self-employed beekeeper, and favouring large-scale commercial operations.
Of course it is during the pollen collection process that the bees transport pollen between plants allowing pollination and subsequent production of flowers and fruits. Any threat to honeybees, reducing their numbers, would be very harmful to food production.
